  1. I'm not expecting everyone to be sunshine and rainbows. I'm not green to the fact it's hard work, but what I won't stand for is the sexist caveman mentally that seem to creep in to every post. I can take hard truths with the best of them, but telling me it's 'a mans game' and 'women don't cut it' is just ridiculous. There are people that are shit in both genders but tarring only one with that brush is archaic. I'm willing the work my butt off, learn and prove my worth just like any newbie on site should. I have spoken to some great people on here and massively appreciate their input, but sadly like I said before the 'tear people down brigade' shout the loudest.
  2. So far everyone I've met in the industry in real life has been nothing but helpful, patient and willing the take the time to show and teach me stuff. A ls well as give me a balance view of the profession. Unfortunately 99% of social media hasn't been so kind but negative people always seem to shout the loudest. I'm developing a thick skin and it's paying off.
  3. Oh I can see that, but for the moment I'm just happy to be out and learning. I have plans to get off the ground or in to machinery so it's all good progression
  4. 🤦🏻‍♀️ no they weren't. My first post had to be deleted by admin as it was so bad. The 2nd post only went better as I started it by telling people to behave.
  5. Small update on my career change. I never know if anyone cares but here I am... So if you remember i popped a post up weeks ago asking for advice on getting in to the industry, the comment section turned in to a total sh#t show of 'Don't do it' 'Its not for women' 'you're to weak' 'Don't need women on site' Etc etc But anyway, didnt put me off. I've booked on for my cs30 in 2 weeks' time (sooner that orginally planned) and after sending out a bunch of emails looking for work experience, a guy has given me a chance, and I had my first day yesterday. He was impressed with my work ethic and hes recommended me to another guy who's offered me 2 further days work. So actually all is going great, the guy I worked with on the first day was excellent. Was happy to stop often and teach me as we were going and in return I worked my socks off. We (he) felled a tree and I cleared the ground, shifted tools, ran the chipper and did general ground stuff. It was a great day and I learnt alot and at no point did I feel my sex was a barrier.
  6. I have full PPE and my husqvarna 550xp and a selection of garden/landscape tools. I've bought my course forward to a couple weeks time so I am going to focus on that then continue the search after Xmas.
  7. Well thank you to the helpful among you, ive really taken on board your suggestions. I've actually now bought my course forward, so definitely not put off, just more spurred on. 😘
  8. Thank you for your kind comment and fantastic advice. Luckily atm I'm working part time so can afford to give a a day or two away.
  9. 🤦🏻‍♀️ wow, just wow mate. You are either a complete troll or live under a rock.
  10. Obviously never been on Instagram. Search #womeninarboriculture tag. You'll be surprised
  11. Sorry all just catching up on the comments, the entertainment factor 👌 Just getting my PPE on and my big boy saw ready lol
  12. Good idea, I have already contacted the forstry commission and the forest of avon about volunteering
  13. Bristol, but can drive and will travel a reasonable distance
  14. I should have said. I've emailed several big, small and one man band companies and asked in a few arb/forstry fb groups. I've been very upfront with my experience level and future plans. Sidenote....should I be looking to get my own insurance etc now?
  15. Hi all So let's see what lovely replies I get this time. 😉 Just a quick question really about gaining experience, I'll be gaining my cs30/31 tickets after xmas and in the meantime I've been asking around for any groundie/help work I can take on. Im offering myself up for free as I am brand new and just greatful for the opportunity, but alot of places are asking that I have experience already. How do I gain experience if I need experience to work? Anything else I can do to boost my chances? Or should I wait until I have my tickets so I'm a bit more useful? Sidenote: knock off the 'Don't do it and the job is shit' messages, thanks👍 To add: I should have said. I've emailed several big, small and one man band companies and asked in a few arb/forstry fb groups.
  16. I had my post deleted as it was just getting silly, i have had some lovely and encouraging dms tho. I do get what you are saying. I'm in a similar boat. I'm leaving 15 years of a well paid career and im approaching 40, but you only live once, and nothing stops him giving it ago but then decided to return to his previous career or even doing both.
  17. I get what you're say but I'm not an idiot. The Internet is full of people who love a moan, where as by talking to genuine people in real life working the job has been much more beneficial. And like I said it was a much more balanced outlook on the industry. It wasn't all positive but it also wasn't all men tell me I'm a silly weak little girl who should do something else. Unfortunately unhappy people are the loudest when it comes to social media.
  18. Just started to get a bit weird and I ended up with a fair few DMs.
  19. I had a lot of negativity on my post (now deleted) but when I spoke to actual people in real life it was a much more balanced outlook. Life is too short to not give stuff ago. You might hate it, make no money etc but at least you can say you tried.
  20. No advice but I'm in the same boat. 15 years working in private education and just about to jump ship in to arb at 36. The way I'm approaching it is I've halfed my hours in my current job and am hoping to get some groundie work on my free days to aid the transition
