Log Grab

Has anyone used a silage grab on the loader to lift logs, obviously it wouldn't be much use on very large ones, but those 12"-15"?

yes, i do. managed to find one with big chunky tines so that you can bend them!

They are ok but once grab is closed it a big open square not like a log grab which closes right up. Single small trunks are a pain unless times are strong and you can pick them up by pinching them but you can only move one a time. 

Grab like that is great for brash

As above, horrible for logs but good for brash. I'd get one with a flat bottom (a bucket grab) as it's much easier to skid along the ground without digging in.

made my grab from an old bucket.  Still in testing phase before i figure out hydraulics etc but seems to work ok.

Big issue is if the steel is tempered or not. 
Otherwise you’ll bend mild steel like cheese.

I bought a clapped out Sanderson muck grab and fitted some cone adapters for the Matbro.  It has been much abused and much welded on the grab but the tines are strong.  It is really useful for picking up large heaps of brash by tilting it forwards and dropping it down vertically on the heap with the grab wide open before grabbing at ground level

I've not so long since bought a rough old grab for loading biomass logs into 40 yard bins. Don't give a toss if it bends or breaks etc that's what a welder is for. Seems more than up for the job so far. 

 

Was a cheap grab bought off face book and just welded some new brackets on
