Saw Choice - Tricky

Can't make my mind up 🙄.

 

Been offered used but both in very good condition a

 

Stihl MS461 vs Stihl MS500i.

 

Will be used with 25" bar the majority of the time. 20" very occasionally. Already got a MS660 running a 28/30/36 if needs must but doesn't relish it. Superb on 28/30.

 

But want to help my elbow heal so above choice is before me 

 

I've heard the 500 is perfect on a 25". Light, fast, snappy. Likes a drink. Also heard it won't gear down on her like a 46 series saw. Used to own a 460 and fine on 25". Is a 461 about the same as the old 460 or what?  Is a 46# really torquier than a 500?

 

Struggling to find exact weight of 461.

 

I'm not confusing this with a 462. The latter isn't on the table.

 

461 is £450.

500i is £975.

 

Decisions decisions. Any wisdom gratefully rx.

461 and a weekend spa retreat to de-stress from the whole thing. Your hearing will thank you as well

The MS461 is a decent enough saw and follows nicely on from the MS460 in its weight, design and feel.

The one advantage over the 500i is that the 461 is a relatively basic machine and can be maintained without plugging it in to a laptop etc so if you are maintaining it yourself...it is worth considering.

Just make sure the top end is OEM and not some old aftermarket crap.

I'd go 461, solid repairable long lasting saw which I'd say is a better bet second hand.

 

For your elbow I'd prescribe an MS400 though, on a 20" you'll use it more than you think even when the alternative is a 461 because it's so much lighter.

Wots wrong wi my 362?

That the bloke in the shop was wile keen to sell me.

Not that they had much else on the shelves, and it transpired the dealership was in the process of being sold and then moved to another location only weeks/ months later.

Hence the stock rundown.
