First I thought there was no hydraulic oil at all looking at the level.

So I opened it and found the tank full to the brim. 

That would have made an expensive mess on a clients tarmac drive had I gone out on a job.

5 litres or more I siphoned out.

We generally fill to the bottom line of the sight gauge. That way, when warm the oil is nicely in the middle.

He clearly thought it was empty and a contributory factor to the engines problem.

That’s just allowing for leakage from the seals getting tired of waiting for the engine to start
