Indeed, many are reoffenders, so 23 hour bang up doesn’t work. If there was enough prison staff to try to rehabilitate these folk perhaps things might change? That doesn’t change the fact that our prisons are at bursting point. What should be done in the short term to resolve the problem?

Outsource it to Rwanda.

Hard labour rather than games consoles and all the other perks and privileges that prisoners get. Thereby addressing another problem that we currently face.

Figuring out why there are so many criminals in the first place and addressing that would help. I reckon giving teachers some of their rights to discipline kids would be a start.

Another problem with prisons is once in there they learn new tricks and can be even more of a nuisance when they come out, it certainly has no effect on reforming the convicted. Simply building more prisons does sod all towards fixing the problem.

Exactly this. Treating the symptoms rather than the cause isn't the way forward.

Drug addiction being a good example. Where's the sense in sending drug addicts to jail where they can just get easy access to harder drugs, learn from other more serious criminals, finish their term and then go out into the community to commit worse crimes to feed their worse addiction?

Building more prisons is a bit like building more roads to ease congestion. It doesn't work in the long term.

there is a young offenders prison near here that provide lads to help in the community to do pensioners gardens one day i was talking to the organizer/supervisor and he was saying that it was hard to get the lads to volunteer saying they will come and after the first day refuse anymore because it hard work. Easer to stay in the prison and play games and watch TV

One other option for minor offences would be reintroduce the Stocks. However rather than throwing food at the crook, the Stocks should be positioned in Glencoe during the months of May-September. I guarantee a night in one's underwear with the midges of the west will be enough to deter all but the clinically insane from a life of crime.

Perhaps prison is to easy these days, no slopping out and nothing more than a radio back in the day. It didn’t matter how much private cash you had in your prison account you could only spend £20/week in the canteen. That said, the same faces were always doing the rounds.

National service would go a long way to reducing crime in younger people.

I don't think it would mate,if you draft some little chav from "chav manor" then beat him untill he is responsible and give him a gun. You are only going to create a more savvy chav who returns to chav-land with more skills he can use for nefarious purposes.

Society in alot of the UK is made up of "takers" ,generations of people who the concept of giving is foreign and probably couldnt find the UK on an unlabled Atlas, even if they could read. Its actually not alot different in Norway, there is a huge amount of social dependency its just that the spoon is so gilded that  you dont see them hanging about like you do in the UK.
