Gone mad

I knew couples who had to become grockle bargies at the time of the poll tax - some without engines and one with twin screws but only one engine so the tiller had to be set away to compensate. There's alot round Bath but mooring fees aren't really any different from council tax. Maybe it's better in Staffs?

If you want to moor in a marina it isn’t a cheap way of living, I’d look for an online mooring on the offside. They are about just difficult to find. It’s a case of asking if there is any availability as you pass.

I’ve been to have a look, it’s been refitted recently inside, but it needs painting, not a cheap job. I’ve sent pictures to a surveyor who will come and get it out of the water, he seems a straight enough bloke, without seeing it, he says it looks like strong money, but made by a good boatbuilder, it will go into dry dock in two weeks time. We’ll see. Oh, that’s £585 to have it looked at, the seller says there is room for negotiation.

Having seen a few horror stories over the years regarding inspections, I'd go along and have a look at the same time if you can.

Living next to a canal you hear plenty of the problems, but unlike a house you can atleast move to somewhere where the grass is greener.

How much for a scan of the hull for thickness of remaining steel, I don't know much about it but it was done on Isabella before my mate bought her and continuous cruised for 5 years. She was sold in the summer and he lives in a bungalow now.

It’s £585 all in, if it’s right it will be blacked at the same time. I’d have to do the blacking, or pay to get it done.

Well if you do the prep watch out for those cup wire brushes that fit on an angle grinder, I ended up with a wire stuck in my fore arm.

Good luck! I've enjoyed several narrow boat holidays and would it again!  We used to get the odd moorer on The Soar, at the end of Soar Lane, my yard was at the end. Amazing how the log fairy visited at the same time!

I can’t afford a house,,well I could but it would mean a lot of work, so after taking a blow to the head today I’m going to look at this tomorrow, if it looks alright and the out of water survey comes back ok I’ll be moving, slowly.

Brilliant idea. Lots of benefits to living and travelling on a barge. Just think of the laugh you could have when you sail over the top of a “just stop oil activist” who’s glued themselves to the bed of the lock😂
