My work laptop is finally on its way out so I need a replacement soon.

I know enough about computers to get by, but it's been about 8 years since I last bought a laptop and things have moved on a lot so I don't really know what I should be looking for. 

 

I'm not too bothered which brand but I'd prefer to avoid obscure Chinese manufacturers, even if their laptops are good value. Graphics card, screen resolution, touchscreen not important.

 

Needs to be running Windows, minimum 250gb SSD, and good battery life. My budget is up to £500.

 

If at all possible, I'd like to be able to charge it from my Makita 18v usb adaptor as I sometimes take the laptop away with me for work. 

 

I've had a look in Currys but it seems only the £800 + laptops have the ability to charge through the USB type C ports.

 

Any suggestions?

What is wrong with the current laptop? If it is just sluggish, stick the most RAM you can fit and stick in a new SSD in it if it hasn't got one yet. Doing this is relatively cheap and TBH, unless you are a top gamer or a professional Graphic designer, it will get you back where you need to be for relatively low £££!

I have my old work laptop from, I would guess 9 years ago and it boots in seconds and does pretty much everything I need it to do!

Slight derail mate, but I never knew those Makita adapters existed until right now!

Can’t help on laptops, although I see a lot of Lenovos about these days.

Lenovo E series are pitched at low frill, business user. I think they are good value, we've got half a dozen users in the office and they have been well made and reliable, also USB C charged. Might be slightly over your budget though.

 

As Spud said though I'd have a look into SSD upgrade, it's what I have done to mine.

Those Makita USB adaptors can put out 2.1A at 5v.

 

Might charge a phone or an iPad but probably not going to have enough grunt for a laptop or be at the right voltage as the USB C chargers for laptops seem to be 45w power supplies, 2.25a @ 20v

don't know where you are located but round here this firm Computer Repairs Wetherby - Laptop, desktop, mobile, tablet (thepccrew.co.uk) sent me a email the other day saying they had some laptops for £350 i am not that Savy on IT so don't know whether they would meet your requirements, but they may be similar in your neck of the woods or just an upgrade

I second this. Had a Lenovo for a number of years and very reliable, easy to self upgrade and will certainly be my lappy of choice when the time comes again 👍
