Problem with my MS 661

How thick is the oil you are running ?

Just standard Stihl chain oil

I do find saws will make more oil mess when run without cutting wood (for example when tuning) Does the saw make a mess when cutting wood, bar buried to the tip?

If you rev a saw flat out without cutting, the oil covers the clutch cover and just drips out when left to stand. When you are cutting, it transfers to the chip and wood so little is left to drip from the saw.

The 661 has a two position oiler. If you are using a shorter bar, turn it down to the lower setting.

I don’t agree with turning the oiler down. Too much oil is the least of the problems in many regards. Especially if you are cutting ash or any deadwood and it really helps reduce bar wear long term.

Agreed, someone once told me you cant have to much chain oil. I suppose this makes sense when you think of all the stress and heat endured by the bar and chain.

Remember the synthplus stihl chainsaw is rheopecitc......which mean it is VERY fluid when not agitated, but becomes thicker when being thrown around on a running bar and chain so it sticks better.  The advantage of this over traditional always 'stringy' chain oil ,is that it flows better through oil pumps, oiler holes etc, so is more likely to find its way to the bar without clogging.

 

The disadvantage of this type of oil, is that you will get more pooling of the oil at rest or when on idle.

Thixotropic is the opposite, thick when static but gets runny under motion - like ketchup flows when you shake the bottle.
