... to sentence people to longer terms to solve the backlog at crown courts, how's that work when a defendant can elect to go on trial?

Who on earth would plead guilty at the magistrates court when they've got a chance of getting off at crown court?

Country has gone bonkers.

Hmmm, a real tough one that, a guarenteed longer tougher from the magistrate, or toss the jury coin at crown court.

I thought that was the idea, you throw your hands in at the magistrates to get it over and done with, with a lighter sentence, or you go to crown to have it out, and hope you can beat 'them'?

I have been baffled for years why sentences /fines etc in different counties seems to vary so much for similar offences .in some areas if someone shoplifts they won’t do anything if the value is below certain amount (200 I’m told before police intrested ) then there is other areas where if they took £20 worth then there being over punished .in one shop there were few regulars would constantly come back for more and no one would stop or challenge them and police would rarely ever turn up .I guess the message is do your homework first before taking miss Miggins  to the local atm at 5am 😂

Just plead guilty mate.

Done nowt wrong this time, it's madness. Give magistrates stronger sentencing powers to help the backlog at crown court... err no, more people will go to crown if they know they're going to get a harder kicking off the magistrates.

Not if you add what the magistrates would of given them to the sentence!
