I bought an A grade refurbished HP Elitebook laptop six years ago from Tier1Online for under £300 inc. VAT.

Same firm I used, my wife still uses the one I bought 4 years ago and I presented my very eccentric primary school friend with a £200 one in September. He made the mistake of telling me he couldn't manage anything other than Windows but how I wish I had loaded it with Linux as he tips up here once a month near bedtime and starts downloading 2 hours of updates.

Rather than flinging damn expensive options out there, what about looking at what she intends to do with the laptop and then match the requirements and add a bit to make sure!

Being a bit stupid....what can one of these Apple lappys do for me that my aged souped up Fujitsu cant? I guess looking "cool", "trendy" and socially acceptable is in there but that being said, a fool and their money are easily separated!

I do tend to think of Apple as "kings clothes". I get their customer support thing but that is for the uninitiated who think FSB is the Russian secret police and wear tin hats to protect them from viruses!

Their customer support is shite. She broke her apple phone screen and battery was dying, 4 days to get an Apple techie booked in Kingston, i took it to shopping center day after, guy on stall fitted new screen n new battery fr a Oner in an hour. K

I just bought my daughter a MacBook Pro. As she’s just started Uni as well. We’ve had our MacBook Air going on 10 years and only needed to change the battery. They are very well built machines. Personally I don’t like the operating system and prefer Windows but kids love the Macs and if they’re used for anything Arty then a Mac is the biz.

As with anything get the best you can afford. Macs are a pain as you can’t add ram later so make sure it’s the biggest you can get.

Personally I’ve found Windows machines quite throw away. You get 2-3 years use out of them abs they’re gubbed. Apple products seem to just keep going and going.

+1 for Macbook air. Work brilliantly, last ages (Ive had one do 8 years hard graft when I used to travel the world a lot) small enough to slip into a bag for carrying about, but with a great keyboard/track pad for actual work. Typing this on one right now.

Its worth noting as well the Macbook air is the nicest to type on (of the apple range that is), so if you want to get her something for doing actual work on, its definitely the choice. Its going to rinse you for £1300 min probably, but its worth it long term. Just be sure to get the (current) 2020+ model not some discounted pre-2020 version. The 2020 on one fixed all the stuff they ruined on the 2019 version.

Damn, I’ve almost just re-written your post. 🤣

The missus likes her MacBook Air. We went with the Pro for our daughter as she likes the wee bit extra ooomph as she dabbles in digital art.

This is a self portrait she did for 6th year. IMG_4009.jpg

From a bit of digging, i5 and i7 are quad core CPUs so would stick to these rather than i3 which is single core.

512 Gig SSD will be good, 8GB RAM .....something like this would do the job....

https://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/lenovo-v15-iil-core-i5-1035-4gb-512gb-ssd-15.6-inch-full-hd-windows-10-home-82c500g4uk/version.asp

I have been using Motorola phones manufactured by Lenovo for a while and they do the job.

As others have mentioned, most Graphic Designers/Marketing People use Apple so if she is doing Marketing or Graphic Design then Apple is the way otherwise....match what she needs.
