I attended a 2 ropes training session recently and they demonstrated various setups 2x mrt 2x srt and mixed. No one used an ASAP or backup type line. Some setups looked a right pita, although others were fine.
I spoke with a guy from treemagineers and he said felt the ASAP wasn't suitable for treework.
I too have found Joe's custom system the most user friendly!
BTW i am trying to use 2 ropes when suitable/helpful!

Boring answer...using same srt petzl rig setup as normal plus a 25m 11.5mm line with a spider jack ddrt, which self tends a bit too well to climb on (yes I know), but good for a fairly painless second system, and can easily control both with one hand on the way down and out, plus short lanyard.

I take it most of you lads are self climbers then and not employing climbers or have you just said sod it, and decided to press on with double MEWPS and invisible lines instead?

 

It does seem like  climbing on 2 systems is a massive chew. I've never known anyone to cut through their mainline or for their main anchor to fail, but I dare say it happens. 

 

PS I'm not the HSE in-cognito, you're fantastical lines are safe with me whether they exist or not….

Seen a few mainlines cut through normally on congested cypress etc, but that's what your lanyard is for....

shirley your main line should be upright from waist height, and saw should be below the waist only and to the side. or a meringue?

 

in 20 odd years ive cut my line once, and it was the trailing end to the floor below attachment in a leaning tree.

To be fair mate, I’m employed by a company who “insist” on using 2 rope system, however it’s not something that’s really been enforced…..In all honestly I have used 2 ropes on the odd occasion, but it’s usually just the tail of my rope with a prussik-usually when I’m anchored SRT in an adjacent tree and need something for changeovers. If you need a second line purely for access then maybe question what you have anchored into…..

So I’ve recently moved firm and the new firm want you climbing on 2 lines.

Definitely one of them the more you do it the more efficient you get with it. The Camp Gyro triple attachment is a must in my eyes and keeps your bridge nice a tidy.

At the moment I’ve found climbing with 1 SRT line and 1 DRT line the best for me. I like having that mechanical advantage on my DRT line for those small adjustments with work positioning.

I’m by no means a HS bible basher and 2 rope working has been a hassle but it is what it is unfortunately and there will be a time when it’s the norm everyone climbing on 2 lines so I’d rather get ahead of the crowd as I know most still only use 1.

CAREFUL! Paddy will surface like an activated sleeper agent.

 

Good tip on the 1xDRT, 1xSRT btw. That's what I usually do when I double system.
