Caterpillar Cocoon on rope

Hi All. Did a small take down on a willow tree recently, packed the kit away and pulled it out 2 days later to clean and discoved a passenger. Anyone ever seen/had this happen to them? Had to fail the rope as it had gone through 4 of the outer and one of the inner strands creating its cocoon.

It’s a new one on me as well. I’m also liking the rope brush in the vice, looks much easier than using it in your hand 👍

Lol 😂 that’s mad have you any idea what type of butterfly 🦋/ moth it is ? Never seen climbing gear chewed seen plenty of fishing tackle chewed  by mice or moths what’s been in the garage 👍

I know you get clothes moths but didn't think anything ate synthetic rope.

 

Looks like some form of hawk moth, anoying but rather interesting. What tree did you take down?

Willow he says .  I know there is a Pop hawk moth . Is there a willow one ?

That's why I asked, the pop hawk moth 'pillars often eat some willows.

 

Looking at the colouring though I'd guess elephant hawk moth and the 'pillars feed on bedstraws and willow herb so worth knowing what was growing around the tree.
