Chain stopping in cut

Hi everyone,

 

I recently bought a Stihl 500i. After using a ms251 for a while I think the 500i is a real animal of a saw.

 

I've came across one problem. When cutting timber into rings the saw cuts really well until I rest the felling spikes against the wood. Once I do this the chain suddenly comes to a stop. The engine continues to run.

 

So far I've cleaned the bar and checked the powerhead. There are no signs of damage.

 

 

Any suggestions or advice how to fix this is appreciated. 

 

Could this be incorrect filing technique causing the teeth not to cut straight?

Sounds like a dull chain,  perhaps the rakers need taking down ?

just dont rest the spikes on the wood 😎

keep the saw on a slight angle nose-high and just let the saw pull itself through the log, no effort

Yes but you should be able to lean on the bucking dawgs/spikes on an 80cc saw FFS . Something else is wrong and I suspect the chain .

Yep exactly. First thing I’d suspect is the depth gauges have been taken down too far.

My best guess is the clutch is slipping, if the engine is still racing and the chain is stopped then the clutch is slipping, should have waited for the Husqvarna 592xp.

If the engine is running but the chain has stopped then your clutch must be slipping, there will pretty soon be signs of heat and blueing.

What bar length? Are you letting the engine slow down before it stops?

Put a new chain on.
