I recently bought a second hand Hoyt recurve bow, there is actually some really decent kit out there that isn't expensive if you know where to look - and brands like Samick and Bear Archery make respectable recurves for lower 3 figure prices, a little over 100 will sometimes get you a very good beginner's bow. Tenterden has an archery club apparently

I had a really good chat with Merlin today, they were very helpful, discussing my height, build, intended usage etc.

I’m going to go for their ‘First Shot’ kit recommended by Muttley.

68” recurve with 26lb draw.

The riser is good for limbs up to 42lbs as I progress, if needed.

I’ll get some extra arrows as well.

It won’t take me long to lose 5.

Mike hill, have you seen this, you have some competition fella.

Nice thread Mark. Let us know how you get on with the kit.

The 26lb bow will be perfect.

I have 30lb bow , 40lb, and 60lb . 40 is gets the most use. Good you can go to 42lb if required

30 will kill most beasts

Nearly shot my phone with the 30!

Come on chaps, I know you have the talent.

I know a good woodland school in Sussex who do week long classes in bow and arrow making in the woods [emoji106]

I've made a couple, mostly been on crossbows over the past few years, made a lovely longbow from hazel, no photo though. This is a short bow experiment in scotch broom I haven't finished tinkering with yet. 20210727_1912323556595802585457816.jpg

Watched an interesting documentary on the development of the recurve bow.
How it took thousands of years of constantly evolving designs.
Then using modern science to work out the most effective use of the leverage of the arms etc.
They discovered there is a Goldilocks zone of leverage power just each side of the handle, the risers are just there for length.
Then archaeologists discovered a bow thousands of years old, just like the one they’d just designed.
It’s probably on YouTube.

Package from Merlin arrived today.

Great fun after work, 2 in the gold from 10 yards!

Kit seems brilliant, and Connie Hood is well chuffed with her starter kit.

Big thanks to @Gav73 for putting me on to Merlin.

Buy a reasonable bow from Merlin. If you have land to shoot on and that's all you intend to do then you don't need to spend loads,

If you want to buy a kit this would be better thec the previous one mentioned

Ready to take your first shot? The First Shot Archery Kit is perfect for you. Combining a quality take down recurve bow with all the accessories you need to get started.

An archery club could be useful although I've never been to one except in my role as a scout leader.

Cheers for recommending this kit Muttley, that’s the one I went for.

I’m really pleased with it.
