Take corners off square post and you have a Octopost

I think square would look shit unless your in boys ground.  They’ll twist all over the shop- at least octopost has more tolerance to twisting and more faces to staple against if they did twist.

Never known anyone use square posts for net fencing. Loads of extra work for no benefit whatsoever. And would look stupid.

We’ve used loads over the years,. Normally round but sometimes a fence is needed!

Quite a few local contractors use square locally through choice, with a chapper it doesnt make that much difference as u can turn them urself but a pita to try and mel and hold the turning bar, usually becomes a 2 person job melling.

A  lot of local farmers/estates seem to ask for them too.

Must admit i now prefer them for hand ball jobs as virtually imposible to get a 31/2" cundy post nowadays all far bigger almost impossible to mel in.

Still see some old oak rectangle posts along fence lines must be pretty old....

Think they were standard use at some time not sure when they stopped using them for general agri fencing

I guess there might be an argument that square posts last longer- being cut out of the heartwood- rather than cundys which are basically the shit sappy top of the tree. I’ve seen a lowland  contractor try and twist square 5x3s for post and rail up here on  Dartmoor- didn’t end well for the posts. They’d snap rather than twist and it ended up looking like a dogs dinner.
