The building sites where not unionised like many other industries. Most lads were self-employed and often on piece rate. They were in high demand and wages were high. In the 60's my mum was a nurse on £8 a week. My dad was shuttering on sites and was bring home £24 a week, but he had to work for it.

Most of the young lads I have in for a few days as labourers are self employed and can work for it ? What's the difference , I get sick of hearing kids these days don't know how to work.. work in the last Century was mostly done with a hang over as the pub culture ruled ... I think folk look at with rose tinted glasses.... like 200ts .... just saying....

There have alway been and always will be good lads and duffers. I think possibly the main difference these days, is it’s a lot harder to get ride of the duffers.

On tails from the past,

My dad tells of an Irish kerb layer and flagged. He the was highest earner on site. He worked on piece rate and was like a machine. Did it all by eye, no theodolite or the like, but was alway bang on.

One of the big bosses was not happy, wanted to know why the where paying this guy more than the site manager and way more than any other trades man. But the Forman pointed out he was doing the job for the same price as and other kerb layers and generally to a higher standard.

Sounds a bit like Max Quarterman.

I dont know about a site full of pissed up Paddys ? at least they wernt of there tits on weed ? i can only remember Paddy with a drink problem and he got nowt right till 10olock when until he had had his 4 cans of Export after that he was fine, as Skyhuck says they where mostly self employed lads on Piece rate and it had to be right or it didnt get signed off which equalled no pay till it was done right. what we have to remember is these lads on the tools where taught there trade either as a apprentice or by hands on, Then the foreman on these sites was generally 50+ but he had probably spent 30-35yrs on the tools his self before getting the foremans job and you could not hide anything from em, not like todays foreman/site suppviser who is fresh out of collage with a certificate to say he can do it ? and back then there was no Facbook , whatsapp or mobile phones to piss about on all you did was work and if you needed to make a phone call you went to the site office, it is much much different today ,sorry,
