Hi im after some advice on equipment. Ive just got into carving but i dont have any equipment. The photo is of my fourth carving ever! I used someone elses chainsaw and it has a normal 14" cross-cutting bar and chain. Thats it! Obiously theres only so fine I could go with a 5/32 chain and large sprocketed bar but people are saying i'm a natural at it so I would like to get into it more seriously. I'd like to find out more about things i can use to refine my pieces. Sanding? Grinding? And a rough idea of how much it'll cost to get going. Cheers

I can see the picture. I don't know anything about carving but I think what you've been told is right; you do seem to have a natural ability for it. I'd say that is very good for one of your first goes. If I tried to do it, it certainly wouldn't look like that. In fact, you'd be hard pushed to even know what it was supposed to be.

Nice work. A friend of mine who carves uses a 4 inch battery grinder with a disc fitted with chainsaw chain, great for final detailing. Apart from that, I'd also say try chainsawbars.co.uk
Rob knows his stuff and has an excellent website.
First part of this advice is terrible, do not ever consider buying a grinder disc with chainsaw chain. Usually called Lancelot discs, they are stupidly dangerous and have far less control and applications than a standard chainsaw setup.
That aside, do check out www.chainsawbars.co.uk and if you're on Facebook join some of the chainsaw carving groups ,you'll get plenty of help there.
