That has been hot 😱 Put a new band on and try it then don't ever put the brake on to start the saw again.

lesson learned.

Its been running far too long with the brake on, looks like the brake band has snapped just in time before it melts the plastic around it completely and the saw becomes unusable. I i wouldnt be surprised if the roller bearing cage is also damaged along with needing new clutch springs.

Is it your first chainsaw?

yes Chris, this my first chainsaw and also first time using chainsaw.

ya gonna try to open clutch to remove any debris see if Any more damage inside occurred.

So starting saw then fast idle reving with chainbreak on has knackered it?

Does anyone actually start saws with the break on supposedly u are suppose to etc but I never have....

I don't purely due to mechanical sympathy . In fact I don't use one at all but then I am old and come from a time when they did not have them . 🙂

I have never started a saw with the brake on but there again, I am just a scummy saw tech that fixes them:hmmmm2:

Looks like it has been left on fast idle with the brake on and it has caused some damage.

Fit a new brake band and see if it is OK....Probably worth getting some instruction as well!!

I start mine with the brake on just for safety sake really. Lots of the time I'm starting it in a small space and I can see myself clipping something and kicking it back into my nuts or something stupid. My old man was a paramedic and he went to a job where someone cut their nuts off with a saw 🤢

I start it and then click the chain brake off straight away when it's cold and let it warm up. The rest of the time its warm and I don't start it in the fast idle position anyway.

I don’t think you would pass any chainsaw course if you didn’t apply the chain brake first before starting🤔. What you do yourself of course is entirely up to you but telling someone not to use the chain brake when starting when evidently they appear to lack experience is wrong🤔.

Everyone has to start somewhere . Mechanical sympathy prevents me from starting a saw with the brake on .  There wern't any chain brakes when I first picked up a saw so don't use it anyway .

I don't need to pass a course and I like my saw enough to not torture it. The OP will learn from his mistake and if he has any common sense he will not cut off any body parts in the process. He now has enough experience not to run the saw hard with the brake on so he can choose his own course of action.
