It would probably take 20 minutes to fit four new blades anyway so you would have to be on £150 an hour before sharpening blades became a waste of time. 

If you are in a job where you can just pass that cost onto the customer then fair enough but if the cost just comes out of your pocket it is a different matter. In reality it is still money that could stay in your pocket.

 

I only ever sharpen the top face of the blade, I'm not sure sharpening to side faces is physically possible. I would say sharpening at least doubles the life of the blade and more likely triples it. Not for everyone because you have to be able to use a file and some folk are cack handed at such things. Horses for courses, I can't climb a tree.

Agree with this entirely and will certainly give the Gomtaro blade a go when the time comes.

 

However, the Natanoko blade is designed and manufactured in a way that it's meant to be sharpenable so I'm thinking that it may be either easier or more effective, ideally both!

Well they only sell one Gomtaro handle as a spare part, and don't specify a model or size for it, so I'm assuming and hoping that it's the same one on all of them.

The ones with induction hardened tips may be too hard to sharpen with a file but will still sharpen with diamond. I’ve sharpened the sides and not the tops before and felt modest improvement but I think that’s the wrong method.

I sharpen the front face with 2 to 3 strokes and then after all done one stroke on that top relief. Never as good as new but still good, it's therapeutic and I'm tight.

Fully agree btw, indeed I could probably even convince myself that it was cutting at least as good as new.

Cheers gents. I'm feeling inspired to give it a go now. I'm pretty handy when it comes to tools and fixing stuff so I'm fairly confident that I'll make a half decent job of it now I know it's possible at least.
