I’ve been to a few of these auctions over the years.

Prices have usually been astonishingly high for sole reason.

Perhaps people think I’ve come this way, I have to buy something.

It can go absolutely bonkers - maybe bidding fever?  There used to be bargains to be found on bidspotter but their reserve prices creeped up over the years to a point where you see people spending more for 2nd hand tat than you could buy new.

I don't know about large machinery but I've been to quite a few house clearance / bankrupt small company auctions  over the last few years.

They seem quite variable, something obvious often goes for too high a price. On the other hand, on the odd day, some things are an absolute bargain.

That's complicated by the current climate where lots of people seem to be sitting on piles of cash from various grants and not being able to spend it.

Pre covid, I would go to farm clearance auctions when possible and nearby.

I found weather was a massive factor.

Bright sunny day - every man and his dog would be there, as much for the social as anything and it would be a sellers market.

Horrible, bleak, wet & windy day - only the diehards would turn out and it would be a buyers market.

One particularly savage day there was an auction up on Bodmin moor - horrible weather, exposed site, genuinely a miserable experience but I managed to snag 4 trailer loads of granite gate posts for next to nothing. Took me all day to gather them up and get them home though 😂

I’ve definitely found that weather and social element can lead to farm sales going a bit bonkers, especially when buyer’s premium (15% plus VAT being about the going rate from what I have seen) is tacked on.

Back to the OP, it’s not really my game but sometimes I really wish I had proper transportation and somewhere to install kit!
