Saw this at the base of an Oak today, it really stood out. Can't decide if the moss isn't growing there because of the different surface texture (it's been nibbled by horses historically) or if something has eaten the moss from that area. Unusually square I thought for nature.

Ideas welcome.

Yes, it doesn't explain the square but the texture of the younger bark  or the difference in age of the bark over the wound wood?

It does have small traces of green on the younger wood, like staining, so quite possibly just starting to establish.

Suppose the square shape is down to the horse but I can't really picture it.
