Log Burner?

Evening all,

I’ve recently purchased a property that has a log burner (?) on a plinth but does not seem to be fully installed. It doesn’t have enough space at the front for burning logs but it does have a hopper-type space in the top for what I assume would be logs?

Is anybody able to help identify what it is / how It works?

I can't help but now I really want to know as well. No flue means I can't see you burning much in there.

Well you wouldn’t be able to, would you, with all that smoke drifting around?! (Sorry, couldn’t resist...)

I’m intrigued about the stove too though. Is there a chance that the outside shell is a kind of double layer and it actually draws the smoke downwards and out through a flue in the floor? That sounds crazy but otherwise I can’t see how you burn any solid fuel (wood, pellets or anything else) in there without ending up with a room full of smoke.

So it is some kind of stove we'll assume. fire proof? I would be tempted to screw up a couple of pieves of paper, light them and pop them in. If there is a flu and chimney a bit of paper should be enough to create some heat and a bit of a draw up the chimney taking away the smoke. If it doesn't a couple of pieces of paper will send enough smoke into the room for you to notice it.

This is tricky to see from the photo - has it been used before? Nice smooth metal with sharp corners, no remains of ashes, put your hand in and no soot anywhere might suggest new stove that hasn't been used

Final check you might want to do is to look at the chimney, where is it in relation to the stove? (and if you do the paper check, you might see some smoke coming out).

So if it looks like there is a flu and chimney the next thing to do is to get it swept and cleaned then?

Oh, looking at the photos, I assume that is its door stood behind it. The handle from the top to the pipe behind the stove is for the air supply.

If you look at the stove, is there a makers mark anywhere.

So my suspision looking at it, is they stove was placed there to look good for the sale. I suspect it is quite new. No chimney attached - with my stove half the cost was installing a chimey liner in the existing chimney, if your room doesn't have a handy chimney the vendor might not have bothered to do the full job and saved the cost.

So let us know how you get on, it looks intruiging

Pellets would fall through the grill? The top would appear where the flu would fit if it's a stove.

Is this stove in the UK? Is the thin pipe on the back connected to anything, i.e. is it not gas or electric?

It looks too close to combustibles such as the skirting to be a normal wood burner. I had wondered if it's some form of patio stove.

As has been said, is there any maker's details on it? The top bar in the 'firebox' appears to have some form writing or mark on it.

I looks like a sorta " open fire " as that ash tray wont slide in the way its located . I presume the screen thing fits on the front were a door would be on a normal stove . Perhaps its not fully installed ?   edit  just seen the pipe on the back . Could this be for heating oil ?

Hi all.

thanks very much for your responses. It currently isn’t connected to any flue and I don’t have a chimney breast behind it. It’s freestanding and there isn’t any makers Mark anywhere on the unit. There appear to be fire bricks of some sort in the back behind the grill, they have a number “4” written on them.

the tray at the bottom is removable, I assume to clean out ash / coal.

the “body” is double skinned, stainless steel on the outside and cast iron on the inside.

The first of your new pictures is the flu outlet, so as you say it's not connected up. The firebricks look new but the stove used so possibly it's been picked up 2nd hand to dress the room. Have you spoken to the previous owner?

It may be some form of ceramic stove but can't find anything to match on google.
