I see it as our job to explain what we are doing, and why. Some are humble enough to let us make our case, others just have a firm idea in their heads about what a woodland should look like and are not for budging.

 

In this particular case it seems that either the Woodland Trust did a bad job of educating him, or he has chosen to cherry pick their explanation and ride his latest lame hobby horse into the sunset.

I once had the " parish council " type woman outraged by my felling of dead elms .   After I explained to her that they were dead she replied " they look perfectly healthy to me ! "  She was looking at the ivy growing up the sticks .

Getting messages across to Public is fraught, couple yrs ago doing PR on some Rail fellings and explaining that yes, its a large volume of work - but then its not been done fr 20 yrs, this block working makes it more economic so yr rail fare doesn't go up dramatically. They shut up at that point. K

I had a go at educating the woman that runs the page, and whilst I feel it wasn't entirely pointless, it's not really done anything to change her mind.

 

With the historic lack of a forestry industry in the UK, there are quite a number of people for whom cutting trees down is always wrong. Nothing will dispell them of that belief. 

 

Additionally, there is no understanding that productive woodlands can also be amenity woodlands. Look at just about any country in Europe. 

 

In the case of the woodland Mr Farage is complaining about, it's likely to be partly safety (infected ash by public rights of way - it's remarkable how quickly the Commission will approve a licence for that) and partly habitat improvement. Wider woodland rides is the standard policy for the Woodland and National Trust. We've done plenty of it ourselves.

I had a somewhat "special" lady ranting at me yesterday, pretty much quoting Farage's rant verbatim, she was slightly non plussed when I explained that the reason she could see so much sky was because the leaves are off. She thought it unacceptable that we were felling hazardous trees next to the paths, instead "the path should be moved" - despite the fact that doing so would destroy more habitat than what we were doing.
