Which little saw?

The Makita saws have a decent reputation and are even stocked by some of the arborist shops such as Jones and R&T etc

Sometimes better prices can be found at powertool shops such as the link below - cheaper than some of the petrol saws you were considering in some cases

Hmm, well that's food for thought. I had thought of a battery saw but all the "pro" ones are expensive, with expensive batteries.

What I hadn't considered was the powertool brands. DeWalt do one that looks alright...

I've got the smallest homeowner range battery saw and the smallest homeowner range petrol saw, both Stihl. I've been using the petrol one for nearly six years and the battery one for a year or so, both of them light commercially, only me using them. Keep them sharp and don't abuse them and homeowner is fine.

In fact I'd go as far as to say that the homeowner stuff is better in many circumstances because it's so light. I can one hand my 120 battery backhandle at full reach.

I've got a Stihl msa200
Yes the batteries are expensive...
But think of it like this....
How much for 3 years worth of fuel and mix oil?
Then realise it costs about 5pence to recharge the battery.
It's like paying for all the fuel upfront with a massive discount.
Not to mention the quietness of an electric motor compared to a petrol one.
Then there's no exhaust fumes as well, so it can be used indoors safely.
And finally it's a big middle finger to the oil/petrol industry whilst being environmentally friendlier.

Makita duc 353 if you have makita batteries anyways. Ace little saw. Make sure you dont accidentally buy the tooless tensioning one

I think the DUC 353 is the tooless tensioning one, the DUC  355 is normal tensioning and with twin bolts for the side casing, longer bar too.

i have the former and it’s been absolutely fine, although the 355 does look more robust

Let's say on average you use only 1 gallon of fuel mix a week at £6.

That's £300 a year or £900

Over 3 years.

10 charges a week at 5p a charge is 50p a week, £25 a year or £75 over

3 years.

In 3 years the fuel savings alone pay for the Saw...

(And 2 expensive batteries)

Not to mention the health and environmental benefits.
