Can anyone ID this bark?

Recommended Posts

Hi

I was given a few logs for spoon carving by my local tree surgeon, they are particularly good so wanted to know what species of tree the log comes from! These pics below show a couple of logs that were cut a month or so ago and have been outside since..

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

(ignore the small log at the bottom right in the grass)

Hi Josh.

I like to make a fool of myself with these 'ID' threads so... I'll say that's a willow of some type, quite likely Goat Willow Salix caprea.  The bark is right for me but especially salient is the orange colour of the cut wood.

Poplars are closely related so it may also be one of those.

But I may just be making a fool of myself ?

Thanks for this!

Not sure if this helps, but the wood pattern on the spoon came out looking like this...

Interesting!

My wife's maiden name is Alderson - she'll love this. I'll gift her the spoon....

Thank you!

I would say Alder from the colour of the cut face .
