372 advice sought.

So, one of my older saws is this 372, hasn’t been out of the workshop for months.

I gave the chain a tickle, emptied the fuel out, put some fresh in, off it goes, good as gold.
Performance is average, I remember it being a ripper for years, now it’s just ok.

An exhaust stud has broken requiring retapping so I took the thing apart and noticed this black streaking down the piston.

Does this indicate worn rings? If so I’ll just scrap it, I don’t want to put any more money or time into it if that’s the case.

TIA.

Mick

Hi Mick, if the piston/barrel isn’t scored you’d get away with just replacing the ring at only a few quid, did it to my 560 couple of years ago as piston was slapping a bit, it was used constantly until a couple of weeks ago when it started racing (sucking air into bottom end from round flywheel when warm). Would’ve thought yours worth doing?

Damn, some people give in pretty easy. One of the best 70cc saws produced and it is being dumped. I would fit a new Meteor piston, lightly hone the bore and get another 10-15 years out of it.

I would have done a compression check before tearing it down and if it was 160+ then all is good. 150 and lower then it is time for a new piston. The bottom ends are pretty solid as is the rest of the build. It just needs a bit of a clean.

:lol: Only a mechanic who actually looked after and regularly serviced a saw would expect that. The rest of us who operate on the principle that fuelling and sharpening are  maintenance tasks,  think we're doing well getting 5+ years from a brand new saw :D
