I thought they all had horns until you saw them off ?  Could be wrong .

Do you know I thought the answer to that was going to be obvious but my involvement in cattle is so historic that there will have been entire new breeds developed since!

I remember de-horning (disbudding) but I don't think it was done on every calf.

Or was it? ?

Some breeds are naturally polled (hornless) but there is a genetic link between some desirable trait and horns IIRC, so while our hereford cross animals were hornless the pure friesans kept as herd replacements were not, so were disbudded.

 

In the days of milking in stalls horns were not a problem but once they were in  a proper milking shed the horns and aggression in the confined space was a problem.

 

Also memory from 45 years back when I last milked a cow.

They are British whites no dehorning needed the poor dears are getting a bit hungry they're the wildlife trust conservation tool. We've just been having fun making glades in the woods.
