Max wieght for a forwarder to lift?

Just wondering wot sort of wieght is the max a largish forwarder can lift onto the bunk,? Is over bolsters from closeish in?

 

Been looking online at a few brochures many quote around the 160kNM of torque/force for the larger machines.

How does that translate to approx mass lifting wieght?

 

From my old school days, many years ago I thought 1 Newton = 1kg , so 1kN should equal 1000 or 1T but makes the mass lift about 16T which is not right. But that was Newton's and not Newton meters

 

Guessing it's 1.6T?

The man who collects my large logs has a palms 785 crane on a 15 ton trailer. He estimates it will lift 2.5 ton right beside the trailer and 1 ton on full reach. I've left some big stuff behind and he's never failed to get it home yet.
Maybe that's comparable to a medium to large forwarder, maybe they're more powerful. I dont know.

The gear that cant be straight lifted can normally be wrestled over the side.

There should be a chart showing lift relating to distance on newer machines. With trailers the listed lift weight on websites etc tends to be close in but you can always pick up an end and drag it on.

1kg needs a force of 9.81Newtons to lift it. so I tonne requires 9.81kN to lift it.

 

If the kingpost of the loader is 1 metre away from the load you will need a torque of 9.81kN-m to lift the load

 

So 160kN-m will clean lift 8.15 tonnes 2 metres from the kingpost.

 

That's a helluva lift, my county will do 2 after you allow for the grapple and rotator as generally you cannot get closer because of the shape of the envelope. Having said that I once loaded 120Hft (about 4tonnes) onto the trailer with a 24'6" log,

I found a Cat584 spec sheet online, this says 159kNm gross torque and also has a lift capacity vs distance chart which indicates about 103kNm available to lift, presumably the weight of arm and grapple accounts for the difference.

Upshot is 3700kg at 3m and 1360kg at 8m.

And you can take about 80kg off them weights depending what grab and rotator is fitted.

I'm meant to be off Mon and have some jobs to do near ponsse yard, might nip in for a coffee and get it straight from horses mouth.

 

8T does seem a lot for a forwarder to lift thou.

Realistically about 4t straight lift for the biggest machines. I remember having a big komatsu on a site in Scotland years ago and it managed to clean lift a 4t elm log. The main limiting factor is the grab and what it can grip
