So Ive hit a bit of a boo boo. The Boards (I dont know the correct term)I have for connecting the Foot Boards to the Head Boards are too short. :( Its not like I cut them to short, its the length the Log was cut to when I got it.  So I Boards need to be 200cm long for the mattress to fit. But the Boards are only 204cm long. Ideally Id need them to be 212cm for the Tennons so they'd match the Head and Foot Boards. Is there any tricks I could use to salvage this? Or should I start looking for new stock?

I have some 2"x8" Oak Boards that I milled in the start if the year and has been drying since. Would that be a big no-no to use? Ive not even bothered checking the moisture content as I dont see the point yet.

Any suggestions are most welcome.

i suggest you make a large tenon separately and insert one into mortices on both faces of each joint.

assuming the oak sections are big enough then they should be strong enough.

Thats stunning! Lovely work.

Unfortunately I do not know anyone who builds furniture.

Would the below idea's work? As you mention the only issue is having to glue it all together. ?

Andy I’ve got a domino 700 bud. Very easy to use and produced really good strong tight joints joints., if no glue is used they can be eased apart. There are other options ie mechanical connections that would enable assembly/ disassembly as required

maybe a combination of or something similar to the attached pictures.

Damn, they are not cheap! What do you use that for?

Some good suggestions there. Thank you. :) I'll have to have a look at that website. Was hoping to not have the metal fasteners on show. I guess I could always plug the holes after?

  • 1 month later...

Found some time to do a bit more with the Bed. Drilled out the rails for the hidden fastener bolts and cyt 2cm Tennons on the Rails as suggested by someone on here. Morticed the Headboard uprights to take them, then Spent the best part of a day and a half Sanding, shaping and gluing the Head-board together. Today was some final detailed sanding of the dowels etc and started on the Danish Oil.

Next the Footbaord to crack on with now. Kinda fed up with it to be honest. :D  But my Daughter really likes it and is looking forward to getting it finished.

Here we have 23 month old inspecting the headboard before Im allowed to oil it. :D
