Logs and Tree Debris for Chipping

Recommended Posts

I am cleaning up my garden from all the snow damage and still have loads of conifers (and laurel) to cut down. I had an issue with taking green waste to our local depot because are vehicle is classed as "commercial" - 4x4 with a cab. We are waiting on a license for this vehicle but are only allowed 6 visits a year with this vehicle to dump waste and it will take more than that. In addition, my brother won't always be around to move the chained sawed trees for me.

I cannot afford to bring in chipping services as there is so much to do. Soon as we get through one lot there is more to do.

Can anyone advise if there are any tree services companies who would like the wood for free to chip or log? I am in the Newbury area.

If this is posted in the wrong section - I apologise. Can repost if there is a more suitable place.

With thanks,

Kat

Have you had someone to quote?  If you value your time you may find that paying someone to come in and chip is actually very good value, when compared to numerous tip trips.

if you keep the chip it would be even cheaper!  its a great weed suppressant  and gives back to a garden that sounds like is in great need for a mulch   or just add to a compost pile for future use .

if it's got difficult access a wee chipper can still do a great job!

This works well.  Many years ago I cut down a row of Leylands in the garden, paid a local tree gang to chip it onto my drive and mulched a large new flower bed with the chip.  I put it on 8" deep and in 4 months you could see patches of bare soil again.

There are people out there looking for wood to burn domestically, just going to be tricky to find them.  The Leylandi is not the best but free is free and you can still heat the house using it.  The Laurel is very nice to burn.

I burn arb waste provided by a local tree surgeon/landscape gardener and it a right mixture but mostly softwoods.  He can drop off more than I can burn (in exchange for a few bottle of wine) so I'm not in need of more but worth asking around locally.  Maybe put something in the local classifieds or similar?

Just to encourage the OP Leyland is a softwood of course but actually makes a very decent firewood i.m.o.  I wish I encountered more of them as opposed to the eternal bloody Lawson's that seem to outnumber Leylands 5 to 1 round this way.

You can hire a chipper from a4 hire in Hungerford for £150 a day, I guess you have a tow bar on your 4x4.
Or cheapest option is to burn it
