Claiming from Aviva?

Hi All.

After getting cleared out the other night I need to start the process of claiming on my insurance to get my kit replaced. I got my insurance through a broker locally to me, insurance is underwritten by aviva who I think underwrite most insurances. Has anyone ever had any experience of claiming from them, how hard was it to claim, and what were like at paying out?

cheers tim

I claimed off them a few years ago (household insurance) when our conservatory roof failed, three rooms re-plastered, new skirtings, new carpets and repair to conservatory, they paid out with no problems.

I had my truck insurance with them and had an accident. My first and only one so far (touch wood), and they was so much hassle.

I was on a roundabout and someone pulled out on me so you’d think it would be a simple case. I had to pester them for 6 months before it was dealt with.

Probably didn’t help the person who pulled out was also aviva.

Hopefully they’ll be fine as truck insurance will probably be a bit different.

Good luck

2 years ago i was hit head on in my truck i was with aviva so was the other driver and it happened on the last day of my policy. Aviva was amazing with me but there replacement hire vehicle company they use was a bag of poo. where they said the would get me a truck with in 24 hrs 10 days latter after me chasing them every day to get a hire vehicle asked me if i know of any hire trucks then i gave details of 5 hire firms to them on the 12 day they phoned me and said could i get to ipswich to pick a truck up at 10am this was at 9am that was over 110miles away without a vehicle. buck back to aviva themself total ace with me paid me 10 days of loss of earnings paid me compensation for injuries and paid me exactly what i paid  for the truck even though i had it for a  year  all paid up and when i made them aware of their specialists hire firm could find me a truck they got  me a panel van to me within  the  hour and told me to keep it into 5 days after i received the money from them.

Just make sure you have enough cover for all of your tools (not just the ones stolen). The loss adjuster will potentially come out all nicey nicey and get you to list everything you own. If it adds up to more than your insurance cover they (as in any insurance company) can (and probably will) pro-rata your payout down by the percentage you are underinsured by.

Bartlett’s (Arborisk) are underwritten by Aviva, and they paid out quickly when my chipper was nicked recently.

The problem was they paid out £7.5k, which is what I paid for it, rather than £13k, which is the cost of a new one, even though I was paying for a reinstatement (new for old) policy.

Check the small print!

Also good advice from monkeybusiness above re underinsurance.

I’ve already discovered that despite asking for old for new replacements the broker actually did it with value adjustments so I’m not going to get back the cost of what I paid for the tools. As already said I should have actually checked my insurance.

So far all seems to be going well. Aviva passed me onto a company which work out the value of my equipment stolen. I’ve got to fill in a form with what I paid for each item and a age for each item. They will then work out a depreciation on them and that is what the payment will be. Hopefully a lot of my tools not being that old I shouldn’t get burnt to badly.

Is that because that’s what you put it down for as the price new to you? That’s probably fair enough in that case. Otherwise the more dodgy types amongst us would be buying chippers for 2k and have them conveniently disappear overnight
