Top roller on our chipper jammed itself on the chamber, IMG_0764.jpgIMG_0768.jpgafter looking what the problem was saw that the roller shaft had sheared off.

Called Forst and they arranged a fix for the next day.

Have the chipper back now, new roller and shaft fitted and working as should.

As with all machines things are going to break but only down for 1 day, very happy.

Most common failure for feed roller shafts is large Y prices !

A chipper with good performing feed rollers will pull in most lengths of timber, Y prices squash through the hopper and spring open with great force causing feed roller shafts to fail or with some other brands of chipper it can brake the feed roller hydraulic motor drive shaft .

Cut your Y pieces, simple prevention failure is operators abuse!

It’s a chipper not a compactor

Cant help but disagree with your theory I'm afraid.

When I demo a GM one of the points I will cover is not cutting the Y pieces and the letter box opening helps get odd shapes through. Never see hydraulic motor shafts snap. I have had the motors jam up with an awkward piece of material but no harms ever been mechanically done. Simply reverse, flip material and have another go.

 

Personally I don't think there is the room between the feed rollers and flywheel for material to spring back so aggressively, the base of the Y piece will have already started to be chipped and said Y piece collapsed.

 

Looks more like there is no load protection on the shaft once it got jammed up then the weakest link failed?

Do you do Forst chippers as well as GreenMech?

I can’t help thinking that you don’t use chippers a lot. 

 

That scenario is not one I have ever encountered or heard of.
