I've seen irregular 'heartwood' like that in rowan before and heard it referred to as 'flower' figure. I reckon it's caused by fungus, especially honey fungus, but it turns a dull white timber into something rather special.

Interesting,
A friend earlier mentioned something about the tree compartmentalising the fungus/infection.

No, it's a bit of Elm.
Got a few small logs left for coffee tables.

want it milled at 3".
