Waste carriers licence

Hi all.

 

I'm looking at going self employed and I'm unsure as to which of the two types we fall under.

 

The EA say that it's lower tier if the waste is produced directly from works carried out by your business, however I've seen that the licencing website quotes gardeners as requiring an upper tier licence. I'm not a gardener but I'm not sure whether we would be grouped in with them or am I missing something?

I’d be interested to see how many people ever have to show their waste carriers licence who are small scale self employed concerns.
Personally, I’ve been asked to show it once in 22 years at a landfill !!!!
(I didn’t have it with me !!!! Oops !!)

My local tip site ask for it a couple of times a year. Can't help the OP as I think the Scottish system is different. Was only carrier's or hauliers up here. I have carrier.

I work for a fella at the moment and we've never been asked when we have been to a recycling place so not sure if he has one, I know quite a few people dont.

It’s lower tier for Wöod chip and logs, I had ours checked last Friday and could not use the recycling centre unless it was produced ... is a gardener getting rid of soil ?? Any building waste is regarded as higher.

Everything on the official sites I found says that because the waste is only what you have produced through your business then you would be a lower tier carrier - free registration without requiring renewal. Pretty easy to do on the www.gov.uk website as I remember.

 

I think I had to fill in my number when registering for an account at the local transfer station so have used mine for sure.

Been stopped once on the roadside and had to produce one which I had.

 

I have the lower tier licence which is fine if you don't take away any soil from stump grinding and also the only waste you take has been produced by your work. 

 

So if you take away waste that the client has made then you need the higher tier.

I think that is a website from some people pretending to be official but actually trying to make money from you.

This is from the official site, where it does mention gardener but specifically under building, construction and demolition waste. I still reckon you are lower tier for tree work.
