What to do with all the sawdust ?

I’m only an occasional cutter of the wood, usually because i’ve had a call to come and clear a fallen tree or the similar which becomes my firewood for the following year. I tend to clean up as much of the sawdust as i can to give a good impression tho, so just usually bag it up and give it to local farmers for bedding of horses, cows, sheep etc. I don’t charge for it because it tends to bring me favours in return some times. i.e i’ll get a call to come clear a fallen tree for them [emoji51] so i get a free supply of wood for the year after again, works for me ?‍♂️

i actually give away about few cube a year of sawdust to the local water authority who uses it in dam gate maintenance.

They mix up small amount of it in a dustbin with a little water and dump it on the upstream side of the stop logs ( huge concrete beams ) lowered in in place of the gate they are working on and the sawdust finds its way into any leaks and seals them up as it swells.

Apparently its good for about 24 hours then it would have to be done again

Harvest looks like it’ll be rubbish this year so could have reasonable value as bedding if you’ve got farmers nearby

I give mine away to small holders. If I could sell it I would but you get nowt for it

I would do the sawdust stove but then I would have all the brash left[emoji36]

Mime is going on the compost heap - I only small amounts though (about 2 coal sacks full a year) - with the grass, left over veggies and so on it does OK

I think leegray is right about bedding, a lot of farmers will really struggle this year so I can see them trying out sawdust if it works for their system.

After milling fencing stakes for one particular farmer, I was astounded when he announced he was more delighted with the heap of sawdust than the fence stakes. Said that used in the cow sheds it didn't block up his slurry system like straw does. One good thing about the Lucas mill is it do make a lot of coarse sawdust.

I worked in a sawmill about 10 years ago, we used to bag all our sawdust and the livestock hauliers would take it to put down in their trucks. Apparently western red cedar smells nicer than pig shit.?
