Try dead fluffy gorse, a whiff of a flame and that stuff goes up lovely!

on a wild camping trip a few years ago  i went for a dump behind some gorse. as a committed environmentalist i always burn my bog paper and put a rock on my coil. the fucking gorse went up like external cladding. i ran pants round my ankles shouting to my brother to get the fuck out of there. he is greenpeace to my friends of the earth and insisted we stay and douse the flames with the whole weekends water supply.

Yeah, the gorse can be a little scary - good fun to find a big dead branch at the end of the night, light it from the embers in the campfire and dance around gliding this enormous flaming mass on the end of a stick :-P
Hehe, I'm very impressed! Me pa tried (and failed) to start a fire using friction with a bow, and ended up sticking the bit of wood in a battery drill to get the fire going so he felt better about it all! xD

8-10 sheets screwed up newspaper, handful of small sticks, 3-4 smaller pieces as thick as your wrist, once established normal logs on.

I leave plumbers torch to hand for misses if sticks aint ideal but to be fair she's better at it than me.

people still buy newspapers?

The issue with newspaper is that it smokes quite a lot so unless you have a good pull from the chimney from the off you may get some smoke back in the room,  but it works and works well.

Personally I use the small wood shaving/wax firelighter,  kindling is usually processor waste.
