L200 4wd issue?

Any advice?

I have an old L200 4x4. I have always assumed the 4wd mode was working. When l engage it, the engine sounds different and l always thought it was working. Last week though, when l actually needed 4wd it felt like l didn't have it. Didn't actually get stuck, but how can l test if it is working?

Thanks, any advice appreciated

drive it into a muddy  field and stick it in 4L, engage 1st gear and see if one or both of the front wheels is spinning?  Does the front axle have manual hubs that means you hafta get out of the truck and manually engage them first loike?

That was my plan. Then I thought, with my luck, I'd get stuck! It is the model which you have to manually lock the freewheel hub. Suppose i'll just have to go for it! I'll get the tirfor out incase
