Bluebells and Poultry

But even it is, and I’m not saying whether it is or isn’t, shouldn’t the laws and regulations be applied to the application in hand. Rather than than perceived idea of ulterior motives?

If the applicant wants to build a hide to watch birds on the reservoir, which the wood overlooks and raise a few chickens, it doesn’t seem a big deal. He’s not impacting the woodland with a mountain bike/motocross centre, he’s asking for one car parking space (cell web construction) and room to exit forwards onto the road.

The LA can condition the number of hens he can keep, so as not to impact on the trees. The system seems unbalanced when a farmer can get away with ploughing up roots and have cattle and sheep compacting the soil with wha at appears to be immunity

So they don't live in/next to the woodland already?

I wonder if in a few years time they will be asking for planning permission for accommodation, on the basis they need to keep an eye on their 'livestock'?

You'd need more than 50 birds, and have to register with defra.
Then you'd have "livestock".

I know change of use can be a backdoor to planning regs, but the stated purpose of the application appears very limiting.

And I suspect that as the proposed number of 8-12 would be conditioned to protect natural regeneration, an application to increase stock levels wouldn't get too far.

Which was my original question. what population would begin to become detrimental?

Not scientific, but my neighbour has 5 or 6 chickens, and they roam our garden (and the neighbours) on a regular basis. When they start scratching at an area, they like to keep scratching at it. They tend to target moss rather than healthy grass, which I don't mind. Also mole hill soil and other areas of disturbance / easy scratching. I've not seen them targeting any of my bulbs / roots / underground plant bits, but I don't have bluebells specifically. I'd guess they're roaming over an area of a couple of acres, and apart from the odd patch they've grown attached to, there's not much sign of them being there. When the grass starts to grow again and the soil dries out I hope the new vegetation will cover their scratch patches and they'll target new areas. They do lay delicious eggs!

As in " I will post my intent and see what the reaction of the great n good is " line of thought thingy , Gary ;) k

:lol: Not 'my' intent Khriss, if I was going to attempt to drive a coach and carriage through planning regulations, I'd make a better attempt at it than this.
