I worked for a Case/ IH dealership back then so I would have to be biased and say an IH 956/1056 XL but as already said , tediously slow for road use..

You won't go far wrong with a 50 series John Deere as already recommended..

Yes- much as I like the look of the 956 I think they are probably a bit antiquated for my needs as I need to do a fair bit of road work getting to jobs etc. Also their hydraulic performance is poor (as is the JD 3050) compared to say a Case 5150. I need good hydraulics for postdriver operations.

do you have any thoughts on the case 51 series? I believe some were 40k...

The 51 series were great in their day, I would only be concerned with the amount of electrics that could potentially cause problems.

The engines though , being a joint venture with ‘Cummins’ were superb..!

The Case 51 series has its gremlins like any other tractor but the main one is the compersator valve on the hydraulics which is e expensive to replace if you can find one otherwise a bomb proof tractor.

Has for road work tyre pressures is absolute crucial on them to stop them bouncing around like a kangaroo otherwise pull better than any .

Valtra etc are big money.
