Hey vesp why are you wasting your time on arbtalk? With you being an anthopology expert and a tree age expert.

I'm not a tree age expert, I'm just relating the news that some old wives tales about some old tree's ain't true..

I do have an interest in anthropology mind, never a bad thing to learn were we all came from..  how we all got here..

Perhaps I might just enjoy playing the devils advocate on occasion..[emoji106]1:

My ex girlfriend used to say I was always "so contrary", I thought about it then had to admit she was right. its what I'm like..

she also pointed out I was opinionated, which wouldn't be the first time someone had pointed that out..  I always listen to something and before I know it I'm musing on why they're wrong..  its a gift I suppose..   not everyone thinks the same..
All I want to add here is to emphasise the EX girlfriend.

Disclaimer - I don't know about the particular tree at the centre of this discussion, and have no real interest in finding out.

It is true, however, that many claims of trees being especially old prove to be wildly inaccurate when they are eventually measured.  This happens for many reasons, most notably, making a good headline (in the loosest sense of the word).  I suspect our really old yews are pretty old, but relying on continuity of historical accounts of "a tree" is pretty shaky evidence imo.

Also, regarding David Bellamy, if I recall correctly, my dad worked with him, and testified that he is indeed a "bit of a bullshitter".

And another informative link on tree age calculations (Oaks), posted today on UKTC   http://www.ancient-tree-hunt.org.uk/NR/rdonlyres/DBA72893-65D2-40FE-812D-BBA54FFF8FAE/0/EstimatingtheAgeofAncientOakscorrected.pdf

for anyone who isn't already an expert on the subject :adore:
