Hi

Im going to make my first ever chopping board, using some beech i have.

So 3 questions

1) What is the best type of glue to use

2) What is the best finish to use

3) How hard is beech to router (as in letters / names )

Thanks in advance for any advice.

H.

Titebond 3 is the best stuff out there.

As for finish, the chestnut oil is mineral oil and will not cure in the wood.

Pure linseed oil (not boiled as it contains metal drying agents) will cure in the wood.

You can also use walnut oil and ring oil but be aware of any nut allergies for potential users.

Titebond 3, pure linseed oil as soaks in good but can take a while to dry, mineral oil works well too. Routering beech is fine to, slow and careful as might be some hidden soft spots. Wouldnt go more than about 5mm deep tho because of cleaning issues.

For a used chopping board is it not better left without a finish? Just cleaned and dried after use. Depends on who’s going to use it I suppose and are they going to bother reapplying the finish as required

Another vote for Titebond III. Excellent stuff.

I finish mine with olive oil as it is deffo food safe, should not have any issues with nut allergies and there is always more in the kitchen if it needs refinishing.

Beech routs well but watch the speed as I find it can scorch quite easily.

I have a couple of Oak boards I made a few years ago, again a vote for Titebond, never put a finish on them though as when they get marked or damaged I either run them through the planer or sand to bring back "as new"

titebond III and a couple of biscuits to really hold it together then a coat of danish never hurt it or you could leave it bare if you wish.
