We use the 10mm Docma rope with spliced end/hook but other similar ropes that are strong enough will do (10 - 12 mm for Docma Red Iron), the standard Docma rope is 100m but 50m would do us.

I’d take the rope with the Eder

The crap you end up pulling the line through whilst winching will fill your day to day rigging line with grit and crud pretty quick.

It’s also got a metal guard on the spliced eye which is good for joining to the d shackles and forestry choker chains.

All comes in a decent waterproof roll top rucksack that is good to carry the rope to where it’s being used. Generally somewhere off the beaten path.

Worth it for minimal outlay in my view mate.

Yes beautiful tool but can't do much when it binds up, on clean sites it's a beast for its size. But cant beat a winch on a tractor for efficiency.

No you can’t, but if you can’t get a tractor on site or it’s just one pull and you don’t want to tow the tractor to a job it’s a great tool

Depends what you're doing, sometimes tractor and winch will be best option/more efficient and sometime a portable winch will be the best option/more efficient, its about choosing  the most suitable machine for a particular job.

Sorry for bitty messages - just bragging that we got one of those Docma winches and I think it’s the dog’s elbows - very handy and you can use the tractor as a base if you want to. We’re never going to be pulling 60 foot trees up slopes with it but it’s very flexible. Ed

I see you are using only about 4 wraps on the capstan instead of 8 for a 10mm rope, I find 8 wraps is too many a lot of the time, it looks like you've also add a piece of wire to the rope guide, the Red Iron now comes with a rope guide spring now which can be added to the earlier model if required. Why did Husquarna stop making those combi cans ...
