Well I just swept my chimney today , first time in 2 years and there was a half bucket full of soot , so I suppose if every house produced this much ,as well as what has gone in to the atmosphere then it could be an issue I guess !!     Even with the most up to date stove there will be smoke whilst lighting it and if it is used incorrectly with the wrong fuel etc etc ..... No doubt neighbours in some areas will make grossly exaggerated  claims of suffering ,and the industry will see an opportunity to make more money with new stoves , filters  , kiln dried logs only etc etc .

I sweep mine once a year , at this time of year , and I never get more than about a half inch in the bottom of the stove . Would equate to half an inch in your bucket at a guess . Mind you , all my nappies are well seasoned .

I bet Khan wouldn't go to Northern Ireland and stop the bonfires there....

One thing you've go to give the Irish is that they know how to build a bonfire.

Surprised its that much,  my stoves dont run closed down or burn wood over about 10%.    I get about a 1kg bag of suger volume out of 10m chimney.  Suspect you must be burning solid fuel, wet wood or run the stove closed down for long periods,  all will produce much increased soot levels.
