What's to say that Olly hasn't been shown the ropes by someone.  I taught a mate to climb five years ago he's more than safe in a tree.  All he was asking was whether a cambium saver device might be a good idea.

While he did say they were deciduous trees, I doubt he's taking a 66 up the major oak.

Just thought of something, if Ollie wanted to avoid friction abrasion altogether, he could consider a SRT set up. Would have to buy some extra hardware though, but that would sort the problem. If the trees are small enough to access with a ladder (as fruit trees I would expect this) he could buy or make a lanyard with a protective sleeve. I have a coupe CT Finch lanyards like this and they work well, the sleeve really stays put.

Where are you getting fruit trees from?

I occasionally climb and prune my own deciduous trees.
I wonder if I need to protect my semi static rope where it goes over the branch/crotch.
If it is necessary does anybody have any advice on what to use.
Maybe I could make something myself.
Cheers, Olly.

Ignore all the ranting and going off on tangents

It's like Steve said you use a cambium saver or similar for one or all of the following reduce wear on your rope, reduce damage to the tree and reduce friction in your climbing system.

The easiest way to explain your query is for you to search 'cambium saver' or 'friction saver' on YouTube and watch a few videos.

This guy explains a few options I'm sure there is loads more vids

You'll get it in no time
