Where I work on an MOD site all of our felled trees are logged split and seasoned in a barn and we can't make profit on it so they only sell it at £20 a ton collected.

Absolute bargain IMO. we don't advertise so only a few people actually know about it.

Hang on. Who’s paying for men to make firewood and sell it at £20/cube, which I suspect is below cost?

It is below cost. I work for the. Mod it is only used for staff members, residents of the camp where I work and friends of staff. Getting it off them is like getting blood from a stone. It is not offered commercially to the public.

I’m sure you appreciate that many will object to being forced to pay to heat the aforementioned peoples’ houses. If we’re going to be taxed like gang bang subjects, it should go on actual realm defence and not these perks.

Been quoted Larch £70 per cubic meter in 5 meter lengths delivered 8 inch upwards west wales.  Thoughts...

We get mix of seasoned larch and spruce in 5m lengths between 6inch and 14inch  for £30/ton delivered. Lorry and drag are loaded to top of bolsters and only 20 ton on the load............a processed load makes 95,  90x90x90 bags.  I'd not be doing firewood if cost was £70/cube

£70/cm and 8 inch up sounds like you've been quoted saw logs not chipwood.
