What kind of cuts are people using when doing crane jobs. Mostly intressed about cuts on trunk

Sent from my GT-I9295 using Arbtalk mobile app

"Chair cut"

Cut about 90% of the way through horizontally, monitoring the width of the cut (cut opening up means too much tension, sitting down on the saw means to little tension).

Then remove the saw and cut down on a 45 deg angle to meet the horizontal cut. This way all the fibers are severed and there is little of chance of anything hanging on under tension and shooting up into the air when it snaps.

One of the main things to keep in mind is strop/chain positioning. You need to be starting your cut under the "lift point" i.e. where the strop/chain goes up from the log to the crane, so as you make your cut its opening and freeing the saw. If you get this wrong its very easy to get your saw trapped.

You should watch your cut as your making it, if it starts closing you need a little more tension, if its opening any more than the width of the saw chain, there is probably too much.

9 times out of 10 I simply cut straight through.

Great on big lumps. Providing the cuts are made right it will sit down perfect.
