I have an electric version, and use gloves lined with pipe in fingers. don't like it but the blade will cut metal as well, so only use it with old timber with nails in. Bought a brill saw with blade enclosed, you push the wood towards the blade with a a big metal tray. very safe and quick (sorry can't remember what you call them)

Is it for cutting firewood or ripping up slabs for timber? You would have to take that homemade guard off to cut slabs, the bracket will get in the way

It's set up fror cross cutting, for ripping it would need a riving knife and properly set packing pieces.

The shaf that should hold the fence is missing as the holder is broken off.

Once a blade is that badly rusted it's hard to get a good enge on all the teeth the same.

I haven't used one since about 1974 but in principle you could make a cradle to hold the wood, albeit losing cutting depth.

Yes , I wish to use it for cross cutting. It will take a bigger saw and that is my plan.

I have a fair bit of apple wood to cut up and it's mail for that.

It used to be towed around the village cutting people's apple wood up.
