What's the train weight of a transit ? Surely not 7t. I thought it was about 5.8 ish. So if you load it full and a full 3.5t trailer it will be overweight again on train weight. ............

Pretty sure my MK7 is 6t train weight.

Trailers are great for added volume for sure. Trouble is maximum towing capactity is reduced by overall train weight of combined units so it's still easy to be overweight if you ram the truck and trailer both full.

 

You also bring in nose weights to the equation ....

 

Plated weights are a bit of minefield with uk legislation when you get into the depths of con and use regs.

 

ALL 3.5t are overweight ALLMOST ALL of the time in Arb work. Easy done.

It's funny when people get so worried by towing over 750kg on a post 97 license, and yet as evidenced by this thread and the other one on transit weights they are happy to drive round a ton overweight. The 750kg thing has spawned a whole range of chippers in that class, so they must be popular.

 

Why care so much about a licensing issue and yet not care at all about a weight issue? Driving with the wrong license is not going to kill anyone, but being 30% overloaded could.

Seems to be an incessant topic on arbtalk the weight issue. Anyone here been hauled over by vosa?

Yep I was a few years back and was about 3/4t overweight. They let me off with a warning and a good talking to, they were very reasonable actually. But they did make a point of letting me know that I was now in their system and the next time i was pulled I would be going to court no questions.

 

2 weeks later they pulled me over again, they were watching out for me. I was 4% overweight on the front axels, they allow 5%...so I got away with that one.

 

Scary thing is though that was in an ldv, with no high sides, carrying a level load of Beech wood. Goes to show just how little these trucks can actually carry.
