Does anyone else feel that these laws are more than a little stupid? If you're working any distance away from base it's a given you're going to ram the thing?! See how well it goes down on the job that you're taking the van away with chip at only a 3rd capacity...

Are you trying to justify breaking the law?

Two of my friends have been caught & fined within the last 3 months- cost them about £1500 each!!

I can legally carry more in my tipping trailer & when I need to upgrade,I will simply skip the 3.5t & go bigger.

What is stupid about making sure a vehicle is operating within it's safety limits?

Perhaps our vehicles of choice are stupid- in other industries the 3.5t vehicles are used as tool trucks & little more. Perhaps we need to look at other models for a solution

But if your on your weight limit you're not at 1/3 capacity

If everyone ran legal, either smaller loads in small tippers or running big vehicles and pricing accordingly it'd weed out a lot of the "competition"

Cool. When the thieves come to pinch your equipment they can justify it by saying they needed a bag of smack.

Get a grip will you! How would you feel if you caused an accident whilst you were overloaded?

Let me tell you, a week in prison seems like a month.

I've been pulled over a few times but never weighed, up here they seem more interested in tyres and lights etc. I think as you get older and have kids your attitude to risk changes. I think a lot about my own kids traveling to school, and all the idiots I see on the roads, sends a shiver down my spine. The fact is many of our 3.5 chip trucks can easily be 2 ton overweight, ours was 2.1 over recently, that was the day I decided to get the mog.

Remember that 10 wheeler that ran away on a hill and crashed a while back killing people because it was defective. The owners went to jail I think, not the driver. So if you let employees drive your transit and they get pulled or worse have a smash, you could be held liable.

I'm guilty as sin of overloading, hand on heart most of us are, or have been.

The problem as I see it is there is no middle ground between 3.5T and O licence.

Pete I disagree about other industries. Far more tippers are sold to construction firms than arb, and they're not using them to tip kit or staff.
