Slapped myself on the back today after fixing my windscreen washer pump. There was no water coming out and reckoned it was time to sort it out - so I took the plastics surrounds off (Renault Kangoo) and stripped all the pipes etc, blew them through, removed the jets, blew them as well, no blockages. Unpiped, the pump unit was working, but only dribbling water. I just presumed the motor was tired, or maybe gunk in the impeller or something, and had resigned myself to buying a new pump. I couldn't see any easy way to open the pump housing without breaking it, but just for kicks, consulted the Net to see if there was a hack.

 

The pump actually can be taken apart. And the culprit is a wee rubber widget that swells with age. The fix is to take a blade and slice off a bit of the rubber...so simple, and now my washers are better than ever before.

 

No doubt mechanically minded folks would already know this from experience and chatting with other mechanically minded folks in the pub, but for ordinary people the Youtube is such a boon. Saved myself 20 off Euros.

You tube does come-in handy sometimes.

 

I replaced the CHT Sensor on my van a few weeks ago, T'was easy getting the old one out, just cut the wire and put a long reach socket into the recess, jobs a good'un.

 

Putting the new one in threw me, I couldn't get the socket on the new sensor because the wire was in the way.

 

Ten minutes on you tube I found that if you take a grinder to the socket and slice a slot along its length the wire will fit in there and turn with the socket, jobs been a good'un since.

Yes. That with a new thermostat, flushing the radiator, some new coolant and some head scratching got it going again.

Car trouble. Volvo v40 was making a crazy engine noise. No one knew what it was. Typed Volvo v40 funny engine noise in YouTube and there it was....with the man telling me it was variable valve timing problems. Garage said £700. I said I'll run it into the ground. Luckily the roof got caved in by massive hailstones and the insurance paid out!

Replacing drum bearings on washing machine...second lease of life lasted 3 years.
